Most people see the beautiful homes, professional photographs, and “Sold” signs.
I remember what happened between taking the listing and putting that sign in the yard.
After 31 years in Oklahoma real estate, I have enough stories to make people laugh, shake their heads, and occasionally ask, “You’re actually putting that in the book?”
Yes. Apparently, I am.
My Name Is Wyatt Poindexter. Yes. That’s My Real Name.: 31 Years of Wild, Weird, and Wonderful Deals in the Most Surprising Luxury Real Estate Market in America is now available in paperback on Amazon. Hardcover is coming soon.
If you enjoy true stories that make you say, “There is absolutely no way that happened,” this book has been three decades in the making.
Unfortunately for my dignity, it happened.
The Name Was My First Challenge
Before I ever negotiated a contract, I had to survive school roll call.
Growing up in the ’80s named Wyatt Poindexter meant Hollywood was practically writing material for my classmates. Weird Science gave them Wyatt. Revenge of the Nerds took care of Poindexter.
Most kids worried about forgetting their homework. I was waiting for a substitute teacher to discover my full legal name.
So, yes, the title is a joke at my own expense. It seemed appropriate for a book in which I provide plenty of additional evidence.
Behind the Beautiful Listing Photos
Luxury real estate can look glamorous from the outside. And sometimes it is. I’ve had the privilege of representing extraordinary properties and working with remarkable people across Oklahoma.
But a beautiful house does not guarantee a normal day.
This book takes you into the appointments, conversations, unexpected turns, and deeply uncomfortable moments that never make it into a property brochure.
There are crazy encounters, bizarre situations, expensive lessons, and stories I spent years deciding whether I would ever tell publicly.
Then there is the listing appointment I attended while preparing for a colonoscopy.
My doctor told me to stay home.
I decided I felt fine.
Readers, that disagreement did not end in my favor.
If you’ve ever wondered how long a real estate agent can maintain a professional expression while privately reconsidering every decision that brought him into a stranger’s living room, there is a chapter for you.
And yes, someone blamed the baby.
The Stories That Were Harder to Tell
I originally planned to write a collection of funny real estate stories. As the years of writing continued, I found myself returning to the experiences that still meant something long after the transaction ended.
One deal cost me nearly $90,000—and ultimately a lifelong friendship with my best friend.
That chapter was much harder to write than an embarrassing story about a listing appointment. It meant revisiting the time, stress, financial loss, and heartbreak of trying to make something work that I could not fix.
I learned from it. I am at peace with it now. But getting there is part of the story, too.
So is how I accidentally became a Realtor. So are the doubts, the setbacks, and the moments when I needed encouragement more than anyone looking at my business would have guessed.
Faith became a larger part of this book because it was already a larger part of my life. I couldn’t tell these stories honestly without talking about God, the people He placed around me, and the timing I often understood only in hindsight.
A Book I Never Expected to Write
Part of my original motivation was simple: I wanted my children to have these memories.
Over time, that collection became something more personal than I expected. I wrote about things I was proud of, things I would handle differently, and things my family may reasonably wish I had left in a private journal.
Reading the final copy brought all of it back.
I laughed. I stopped to gather my thoughts. I reread passages and still couldn’t believe I had lived through them.
I am also deeply grateful that my wife, Angie, and The Agency founder Mauricio Umansky contributed forewords. Having their voices in this book makes it especially meaningful to me.
Come for the Stories. See What Stays With You.
You don’t need a real estate license to enjoy this book. You only need an appreciation for unpredictable people, questionable decisions, and someone willing to admit when he was the problem.
My hope is that you laugh hard, turn a few pages when you meant to go to bed, and find encouragement in the more difficult chapters.
Perhaps you’ll recognize a season of your own life. Perhaps you’ll feel a little less alone in a setback. At the very least, you’ll have a firm understanding of when to reschedule an appointment.

I spent 31 years collecting these stories. You can enjoy them from the comfort of your own home—which, in at least one chapter, is exactly where I should have stayed.
