One Negative Comment. One Security Camera. One Expensive Lesson - Wyatt Poindexter - The Agency Oklahoma

Let’s Talk About Real Estate, Opinions, and Professionalism

Every week I post new listings — from sleek modern builds to cozy cabins and sprawling estates. And every now and then, someone jumps into the comments section to share… let’s just say, their unfiltered opinions.

Maybe it’s, “Who picked those colors?” or “That backsplash looks like it came from 1978.” Or my personal favorite — “I’d never pay that much for that house.”

Here’s the thing: these are people’s homes. Their personal spaces. Their colors, their design, their style. And while we all have different tastes — that’s what makes real estate interesting — those opinions are better kept private than posted publicly.

If you wouldn’t walk into someone’s living room and say, “Wow, who designed this disaster?” then you probably shouldn’t say it online either.

And while we’re on the topic of being respectful, here’s something else I’ve learned the hard way: be careful what you say inside someone’s home while showing or touring. Most sellers today have security cameras — and yes, they can hear and see everything.

I once lost a listing to a Realtor who used to work for me because of this exact thing. He was showing one of my listings, made negative comments about the home in front of his buyers — and the sellers heard and saw it all on their cameras. They called me immediately and fired me on the spot. I apologized, then turned around and fired the agent. Lesson learned.

So trust me, sellers are paying attention — not just online, but in real time.

I’ve also seen local Oklahoma contractors and businesses post negative remarks about listings, and let me just say — that’s not a good look. Public criticism reflects poorly on professionalism and absolutely affects who I choose to work with. If you ever have feedback or a concern, text or call me directly instead of posting it publicly.

I don’t take offense personally, but my sellers do — and rightfully so. They’ve poured their heart, time, and resources into their homes. For them, this isn’t just real estate — it’s part of their story.

So next time you see a listing that’s not your style, just scroll on by. Or better yet, appreciate the diversity of design and taste that makes real estate such an amazing industry.

Let’s lift each other up, not tear down someone else’s home or hard work.

And remember: opinions are like front porches — everyone’s got one, but some are better kept private.
