Real Estate Blunders & Life Lessons: The Day I Put My FOOT in My Mouth! Wyatt Poindexter - The Agency Oklahoma

Real Estate Blunders & Life Lessons: The Day I Put My FOOT in My Mouth! Wyatt Poindexter - The Agency Oklahoma

Real estate is full of surprises. One minute you’re showcasing a dream home, the next you’re digging yourself out of an awkward moment. This is one of those stories.
In the late 90's, I was showing my new listing to a new buyer. It had an impressive master closet—the kind of closet that makes shoe lovers weep tears of joy. Wanting to highlight this feature, I enthusiastically pointed out the built-in shoe rack that could hold up to 200 pairs footwear. “Just think of all the shoes you could store in this closet!" I said, beaming with Realtor pride.

Then, the moment of doom arrived.

She looked down at her wheelchair, then back up at me, and calmly said, “Did you not notice that I lost my legs from my knees down? I don’t own any shoes.”

Oh. No.

I felt my soul leave my body. My brain went into immediate damage control mode, and I blurted out the worst possible response: “I am extremely sorry for my comment, talk about putting my FOOT in my mouth.”

Yes. I actually said that. Idiot!!!

Awkward silence. Apology round two commenced immediately as I tried to recover from my tragic attempt at humor. Thankfully, she was an incredibly kind and gracious woman, and she laughed it off. Great, I can keep my Real Estate license!

And guess what? She ended up buying the house.

But Wait… It Gets Weirder!

Fast forward to closing day at Stewart Title, where my buyer showed up with her teenage daughter. Everything was going smoothly—documents signed, keys handed over, celebratory smiles all around.

And then, her daughter turned to me and said, “I bet I can figure out how to tie you up in about 20 different ways with the cord from those window blinds.”
Excuse me… what?

I sat there, speechless, as this teenage mastermind of suspense locked eyes with me. I could feel Wendy Williams at Stewart Title watching in sheer disbelief, probably wondering if we should start calling the authorities or a therapist. Wendy can vouch for me on this story!!!

And that is how a simple home showing turned into a lesson in self-awareness, situational awareness, and mild existential dread.

In real estate (and life), attention to detail is everything. I learned that day that listening to clients' needs (and yes, paying attention to their knees) is crucial.

1. Know your audience. Before making a statement, read the room—or, you know, the wheelchair.

2. Don’t assume. Just because a house has a shoe rack doesn’t mean everyone dreams of filling it.

3. Stay composed. Whether you’re putting your foot in your mouth or being eyed for an abduction, smile and roll with it.

Real estate is wild, unpredictable, and full of stories you’ll never forget. One thing’s for sure: this career will keep you on your toes—even if your client doesn't have any!
