Keystone Lake itself came later, formed when Keystone Dam was built on the Arkansas River between 1957 and 1964 as part of a federal flood control project. The lake actually submerged the original townsite of Keystone, a onetime liquor-trade hub that had grown to a thousand residents before Oklahoma statehood ended its run.
