We recently closed on a home in Gaillardia for $1,525,000. I’m grateful for every closing, but this one brought back memories of a client who gave me an opportunity early in my career—and helped change its direction.
More than 20 years ago, this seller trusted me with one of my very first luxury listings. At a time when I was still working to establish myself in that market, his confidence meant more than he probably realized.
My dad had always told me how difficult it was to earn luxury listings. He was right. It took me almost 10 years in real estate to sell my first home over $1 million. There were years of work, learning, and persistence before that milestone.
This client gave me a chance. I have never forgotten it.
Over the years, our business relationship became a friendship. To have the opportunity to sell his home again was an honor—and a reminder of why customer service matters long after a transaction closes.
Trust Begins With How You Treat People
Buying or selling a home involves much more than paperwork. Clients are making significant financial decisions, managing uncertainty, and often preparing for a major change in their lives.
They deserve someone who listens, communicates clearly, and takes their concerns seriously.
Good customer service means returning the call, explaining the next step, and addressing a problem before it becomes a bigger one. It means being available when the conversation is difficult, not only when there is good news to share.
Sometimes it means telling a seller something they would rather not hear about pricing, preparation, or an offer. Those conversations require care. My responsibility is to give honest guidance respectfully and help my clients make informed decisions.
People should feel that their interests matter throughout the process.
A Closing Is One Moment in a Longer Relationship
In real estate, it is easy to focus on the next listing, the next contract, or the next closing. But the people who helped you build your career deserve to be remembered.
I still think about the clients who trusted me before I had an established luxury track record. They had choices. They chose to give me an opportunity, and that trust came with a responsibility to work hard for them.
That responsibility does not disappear when the closing documents are signed.
A former client may need advice years later. They may have questions about improvements, property values, or whether it is time to make another move. Being a useful resource between transactions is part of the relationship.
For me, customer service includes staying willing to help when there is no immediate sale involved.
Repeat Business Is Earned
When a client returns, I never want to assume that their business automatically belongs to me.
Their circumstances may have changed. Their expectations may be different. The market certainly may be different. They deserve the same attention and preparation I would give someone working with me for the first time.
Being hired again is an opportunity to earn that confidence all over again.
It tells me that the client remembers how they were treated and feels comfortable placing another important decision in my hands. That is a compliment I take seriously.
After 31 years in real estate, I remain grateful when someone says, “We would like you to help us again.”
Gratitude Should Show Up in the Work
Thankfulness is easy to express after a successful closing. I believe it should also be visible in everything leading up to it.
It should show up in thoughtful preparation, careful marketing, consistent updates, and attention to details that matter to the client. It should show up in patience when someone feels overwhelmed and persistence when a transaction becomes difficult.
No sale is effortless simply because an agent has experience. Every client deserves focused work and personal accountability.
The client who gave me an early opportunity deserves that effort today just as much as he did more than 20 years ago.
Thank You for Trusting Me Again
To this seller: thank you for believing in me early in my career. Thank you for giving me an opportunity that helped open the door to luxury real estate. And thank you for the friendship we have maintained for more than 20 years.
Representing you again was an honor. I am deeply grateful that you placed your trust in me once more.
To every client who has returned, referred a friend, or recommended me to a family member: thank you. I know you have choices, and I appreciate each opportunity to help.
At The Agency Oklahoma, I want exceptional marketing to be matched by attentive, personal service. The quality of our work matters, and so does the experience of the person trusting us to do it.
The greatest compliment is being trusted again. My responsibility is to keep earning it.
