THUNDER UP! Oklahoma City Is Ready for an Incredible 2026–2027 NBA Season

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Arrival of Aday Mara, a New Era of Thunder Basketball, and the Future Continental Coliseum

There is something special about Oklahoma City when Thunder basketball returns.

You can feel it everywhere. The excitement throughout downtown, the conversations at restaurants, Thunder jerseys appearing around town, and the anticipation of another incredible NBA season.

I've lived in Oklahoma most of my life, and I can tell you that few things have transformed our city quite like the Oklahoma City Thunder.

What started as an opportunity to bring professional basketball to Oklahoma has become something much bigger. The Thunder have helped put Oklahoma City on the international map, brought our community together, and given us something to celebrate.

And as we begin the 2026–2027 NBA season, I believe Thunder fans have plenty of reasons to be excited.

From our Oklahoma City legend Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to the arrival of rookie Aday Mara, the continued development of this talented roster, and the construction of the spectacular new Continental Coliseum, the future of Thunder basketball looks incredibly exciting.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: An Oklahoma City Legend

Let's start with the player who has become the face of Oklahoma City basketball: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

What Shai has accomplished in Oklahoma City has been remarkable.

His combination of scoring, leadership, basketball intelligence, and consistency has elevated him into the conversation among the greatest players in the NBA.

But what impresses me most is the way he carries himself.

Shai has become more than a basketball superstar. He represents the determination, work ethic, and confidence that have come to define this Thunder organization.

Watching him develop into an NBA Most Valuable Player and NBA champion has been one of the greatest stories in Oklahoma sports history.

And the exciting part? His story is still being written.

For the 2026–2027 season, Shai once again leads a team with championship aspirations.

As a Thunder fan, I cannot wait to see what he does next.

Meet Aday Mara: The Towering Rookie Who Has Thunder Fans Excited

One of the players I'm personally most excited to watch this season is Aday Mara.

The Thunder selected Mara with the 12th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, adding a towering Spanish center who played college basketball at UCLA and Michigan.

Listed at 7-foot-2 on the NBA roster database, Mara brings something fascinating to Oklahoma City's roster: tremendous size combined with touch around the basket, passing ability, and shot-blocking instincts.

At just 21 years old, he is still developing, but his preseason performances have already given fans reasons to pay attention.

Against Milwaukee, Mara scored 22 points while making all 10 of his field-goal attempts. Against Atlanta, he recorded 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and five blocked shots.

Those are impressive performances for a young center adjusting to the NBA game.

What excites me most is his potential.

Imagine Mara continuing to develop alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and the rest of Oklahoma City's talented roster.

His height, interior presence, and passing could create additional offensive possibilities while giving the Thunder another defensive weapon.

Of course, preseason basketball and regular-season NBA competition are very different. Mara will need time to develop, earn minutes, and adjust to the speed and physicality of the league.

But I love what Oklahoma City's front office continues to do: identify talented young players with tremendous upside while maintaining a championship-caliber organization.

Aday Mara is going to be a fascinating player to watch.

The Thunder Are Entering Another Season With Championship Expectations

The Thunder finished the 2025–2026 regular season with an outstanding 64–18 record, securing the top seed in the Western Conference before falling to San Antonio in seven games in the Western Conference Finals.

After winning the NBA championship in 2025, Oklahoma City understands what it takes to compete at the highest level.

The expectation is no longer simply to make the playoffs.

This organization is built to compete for championships.

With Shai leading the way, Chet Holmgren continuing to develop, Jalen Williams providing versatility and scoring, and an organization committed to player development, Oklahoma City has an exciting foundation.

There have also been significant changes.

Luguentz Dort, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe departed during the offseason, creating opportunities for other players to step into larger roles.

Ajay Mitchell is another player I'll be watching closely. His development could be particularly important as the Thunder adjust their rotation.

Of course, the Western Conference is loaded with talent. San Antonio, Denver, Houston, Minnesota, and several other teams will present major challenges.

But that's what makes the season exciting.

The road back to the NBA Finals will not be easy, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Continental Coliseum: A New Landmark for Oklahoma City

While everyone is excited about the basketball season, something equally significant is happening in downtown Oklahoma City.

Construction is underway on Continental Coliseum, the spectacular future home of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The project broke ground in March 2026, with a target completion date in late summer 2028. The city's agreement provides for an opening no later than June 2029.

The Thunder will continue playing at Paycom Center until the new facility is ready.

Designed by MANICA Architecture, with TVS serving as architect of record, the arena is planned to feature a dramatic 360-degree glass curtain wall, panoramic views from interior concourses, and a modern design intended to create an exceptional experience for fans.

The new arena represents far more than another sports venue.

It represents another major investment in the future of Oklahoma City.

As someone who has spent more than three decades working in Oklahoma real estate, I see projects like this from two perspectives.

First, as a Thunder fan, I cannot wait to experience the new arena.

Second, as a real estate professional, I recognize what major investments like Continental Coliseum can mean for a growing metropolitan area.

New entertainment venues, restaurants, hotels, businesses, and public improvements can help attract additional investment and create opportunities throughout surrounding communities.

That doesn't mean every nearby property automatically increases in value. Real estate markets are much more complicated than that.

But major developments can change how people perceive a city, where businesses choose to locate, and where people want to live.

Continental Coliseum represents another important chapter in Oklahoma City's continued evolution.

And I believe our city's best years are still ahead.

Oklahoma City Thunder 2026–2027 Schedule: Games to Watch

The new season begins October 20, 2026, with Oklahoma City traveling to San Antonio to face the Spurs.

That opening matchup is especially interesting after San Antonio eliminated Oklahoma City from the 2026 Western Conference Finals.

The Thunder then return home for their home opener against the Denver Nuggets on October 22.

Here are the first 10 games of the season. All times are Central Time.

The November 6 game against Memphis also marks one of Oklahoma City's NBA Cup group-stage contests.

My Personal Connection to the Oklahoma City Thunder and NBA Players

One of the greatest privileges of my real estate career has been the opportunity to help professional athletes, including Oklahoma City Thunder players, with their real estate needs.

Over my 31 years in Oklahoma real estate, I've had the opportunity to assist high-profile individuals, entertainers, professional athletes, and their families with buying, selling, and relocating.

I've worked with NBA players including Blake Griffin, Paul George, Kendrick Perkins, and Patrick Patterson.

When professional athletes relocate to Oklahoma City, their real estate needs can be very different from those of a traditional homebuyer.

Privacy is often a major priority.

So are security, convenience, lifestyle, and finding a home that works for their families and demanding professional schedules.

Some players prefer gated luxury communities. Others want significant acreage, privacy, home gyms, entertainment spaces, or convenient access to downtown Oklahoma City and the Thunder's facilities.

Communities such as Gaillardia, Nichols Hills, Oak Tree, Rose Creek, and Arcadia offer a variety of luxury living opportunities, each with its own distinct lifestyle.

I've always taken tremendous pride in helping clients find the right home, whether they are professional athletes, business executives, relocating families, or longtime Oklahoma residents.

Working with NBA players has been a memorable part of my career, but I approach every client relationship with the same commitment to service, discretion, and professionalism.

The Thunder's Impact on Oklahoma City Luxury Real Estate

The Oklahoma City Thunder have helped introduce millions of people to our city.

National television broadcasts, playoff appearances, championship celebrations, and the visibility of players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander have given Oklahoma City exposure that would have been difficult to imagine decades ago.

And the timing is especially interesting.

Oklahoma City continues to evolve, with significant investment in downtown development, entertainment, hospitality, and residential communities.

Luxury buyers exploring Oklahoma City are often surprised by the quality and variety of homes available.

From magnificent estates in Gaillardia and Nichols Hills to acreage properties in Arcadia, golf-course homes in Oak Tree and Rose Creek, and beautiful properties throughout Edmond, the Oklahoma City metropolitan area offers an impressive selection of luxury residences.

Compared with many larger metropolitan markets, Oklahoma can also offer substantial space, privacy, and amenities at competitive prices.

For professional athletes and executives relocating from other NBA cities, that can be a meaningful advantage.

As the city continues to grow, I believe our luxury housing market will remain an important part of the story.

Oklahoma City's Future Is Bright. Thunder Up!

As the Thunder begin another season, I can't help but think about how far Oklahoma City has come.

We've watched this franchise grow, experienced the excitement of an NBA championship, and seen our city become a destination for professional sports, business, and entertainment.

Now we're watching another talented Thunder team pursue a championship while a spectacular new arena takes shape downtown.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to build his legacy.

Aday Mara represents another exciting piece of the future.

And Oklahoma City continues to show the world what makes our community so special.

I am incredibly proud to call Oklahoma home, proud to have helped Thunder players and their families over the years, and excited to see what this next season brings.

Here's to another unforgettable year of Oklahoma City Thunder basketball!
