You Got Your Real Estate License… Now What? The Truth About Becoming a Realtor in Oklahoma

Nobody really tells you this part before you get your real estate license.

They sell you the dream.

Flexible schedule.
Be your own boss.
Unlimited income potential.
Six figures.

And yes—those things can be true.

But what they don’t tell you is what it actually takes to get there.

They don’t tell you that most agents quit within the first two years. They don’t tell you that your “flexible schedule” really means working nights, weekends, holidays—and pretty much anytime your clients need you. They don’t tell you that no one is handing you leads, no one is guaranteeing you a paycheck, and no one is building your business for you.

“The truth is, real estate will give you everything you want—but only after it demands everything you’ve got.” – Wyatt Poindexter

The Reality vs. The TV Version

Shows like HGTV, House Hunters, Million Dollar Listing, Selling Sunset, and Buying Beverly Hills have completely glamorized this business.

They make it look easy.
They make it look fast.
They make it look like you get your license and immediately start selling million-dollar homes.

That’s just not reality—especially here in Oklahoma.

This business takes time. It takes patience. It takes consistency. And most importantly, it takes years of building relationships, trust, and a reputation.

“I’ve seen what this business looks like on TV—and I’ve lived what it actually takes in real life. They’re not even close.” – Wyatt Poindexter

My Story: The Part Nobody Sees

Let me be real with you.

My first year in real estate, I made $600.

Not $60,000.
Not $600,000.
$600.

My second year, I made $11,000.
My third year, I made $14,000.

That’s a tough start by any standard.

It took me over 10 years to sell my first home over $1 million.

Ten years.

That’s the part people don’t talk about—the grind, the slow build, the consistency when nothing seems to be happening.

When I passed my real estate exam, I had no clue how to actually do real estate. The test doesn’t teach you how to find clients, negotiate deals, market properties, or build a brand.

Thankfully, I had my father, David Poindexter, who was a top-producing Realtor and an incredible example of what success looks like. He had 49 listings his first year in real estate—which is almost unheard of.

But even with that influence, I still had to build my own path, my own brand, and my own business.

So… What Do You Do After You Get Your License?

This is where the real work begins.

You have to treat this like a business from day one.

That means:

Learning how to generate leads consistently
Building your personal brand and online presence
Networking daily and building relationships
Studying contracts, negotiations, and market trends
Marketing yourself and your listings at a high level
Following up relentlessly
Staying disciplined even when you’re not seeing results

Most new agents underestimate this part.

They think the license is the finish line—but it’s actually the starting point.

“Getting your license is the easiest part of this business. Building a career—that’s where the real work begins.” – Wyatt Poindexter

The Truth Most Realtors Won’t Say Out Loud

I have a love-hate relationship with real estate.

There are incredible highs—but also very real lows.

There are moments when everything is clicking, deals are closing, and you feel on top of the world. And then there are times when you work your tail off—weeks, sometimes months—only to have a deal fall apart at the last minute.

That’s the reality of this business.

Paychecks only come when a deal closes.

If it doesn’t close—you don’t get paid.

That’s the gamble of real estate.

But that’s also what separates the best from the rest.

“Real estate will test you mentally, emotionally, and financially—but if you can push through the lows, the highs are worth every bit of it.” – Wyatt Poindexter

Will You Get Rich in Real Estate in Oklahoma?

Let’s be honest.

Will you become a millionaire just because you got your real estate license?

Probably not.

Not unless you are willing to commit fully—every single day—to learning, growing, and working harder than everyone else around you.

This is not a part-time career if you want full-time success.

You have to be willing to outwork your competition, stay consistent when it’s uncomfortable, and push forward when most people would quit.

Success in real estate isn’t about luck—it’s about discipline.

What It Really Takes to Succeed

If you want to make it in this business, here’s what matters:

Consistency over time
Strong work ethic
Integrity in every deal
Exceptional customer service
Building real relationships—not just chasing transactions
Continuous learning and improvement

You have to care about people. You have to do the right thing—even when it’s hard. You have to show up every day and treat your clients like they matter… because they do.

And if you do those things long enough, the results will come.

There are no guarantees in real estate—but there is opportunity.

A lot of it.

Why The Agency Is Different

For Realtors who are serious about building a real career—not just “trying real estate”—who you align with matters.

At The Agency, we don’t take just anyone.

We are selective.

We look for agents who have character, integrity, professionalism, and a true commitment to excellence. Agents who want to grow, collaborate, and elevate their business—not cut corners.

“We’re not looking for average—we’re looking for driven professionals who want to be the best and are willing to put in the work to get there.” – Wyatt Poindexter

Being part of The Agency means being part of something bigger than yourself—a global brand with powerful marketing, incredible exposure, and a network of top-tier agents who support each other and raise the standard.

If you’re serious about your business, serious about your reputation, and serious about your future, there is no better place to build your brand.

Why It’s Still Worth It

Despite how challenging it is, this career is one of the most rewarding paths you can choose.

You get to help people make some of the biggest decisions of their lives. You build relationships that last for years. You create a business that is truly your own.

And if you stick with it, stay focused, and commit to excellence—you can build something incredible.

This business changed my life—but it didn’t happen overnight.

It happened through years of persistence, growth, and refusing to quit.

And that’s the difference between those who make it—and those who don’t.
