My Job Is Real Estate. My Passion Is Rock ’n’ Roll - Wyatt Poindexter - The Agency

My Job Is Real Estate.

My Passion Is Rock ’n’ Roll.

Most people know me through real estate. It’s what I do every day, and I’m genuinely grateful for it. I love helping people navigate one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions of their lives, and I don’t take that responsibility lightly.

But real estate is my job.

Music — specifically rock ’n’ roll — has always been something deeper.

Long before contracts, closings, and listings, music had already shaped who I was becoming.

Where It All Started

It was 1975, riding around in my dad’s pickup truck. He was a country guy — Waylon, Willie, Hank Jr. That was the soundtrack of my childhood. Then one day, something completely different came through the speakers.

Night Moves by Bob Seger. On an 8-track.

I remember asking, “What is this?”
My dad smiled and said, “That’s rock ’n’ roll.”

That moment stuck with me.

From then on, I couldn’t wait to ride with him again just to hear that sound. It felt emotional, raw, and alive in a way nothing else had before.

Not long after that, I saw KISS on TV.

And that was the moment everything really shifted.

They didn’t look like a band. They looked like superheroes who happened to play rock music. The makeup. The fire. The confidence. It was loud, ridiculous, completely over the top — and absolutely perfect.

Music stopped being something I listened to and became something I felt.

I was hooked for life.

From Fan to Full-Blown Obsession

I had already discovered Queen and loved guitar-driven music, but KISS took it to another level. They weren’t just musicians — they were larger than life.

I started collecting everything KISS. Dolls. Lunch boxes. Trash cans. If it had the KISS logo on it, I wanted it.

My mom took my brother and me to see KISS in Tulsa during the 1979 Dynasty Tour. That night sealed it. I found guitar picks on the ground after the show, and without realizing it, I had just started a lifelong collection — and a lifelong habit that probably should have come with a warning label.

Concerts Became the Goal

Concerts quickly became my favorite thing in the world.

The last time I counted, I had just over 500 ticket stubs from 1979 to 2020. I’ve seen KISS 23 times, U2 26 times, Mötley Crüe 15 times — and that’s just the highlights.

In the late ’80s, my dad sat me down and told me concerts were getting expensive and I needed to figure out a way to keep going.

His advice was simple.
Get creative.

So I did.

Getting Creative (Before It Was Cool)

I started making homemade fan magazines for my favorite bands and mailing cheap copies to their record labels. I honestly expected nothing to happen.

Then one day, Sammy Hagar reached out.

He loved my magazine, The Hagar Herald. His assistant called and said Sammy had two tickets and two backstage passes for the upcoming OKC show.

I assumed it was a prank.

It wasn’t.

That night, Sammy signed over 40 items for me. He laughed when he saw the stack, pulled out record sleeves, and signed everything without hesitation. To this day, he’s one of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve ever met.

That experience cracked the door wide open.

Some bands sent tickets. Some sent passes. Some sent signed promo photos. Suddenly, this world didn’t feel untouchable anymore.

The Accident That Changed Everything

In 1990, I had a serious chainsaw accident that left me unable to walk for about seven months.

This was before the internet, streaming, or smartphones — so boredom was a full-time job.

A friend gave me a massive list of celebrity addresses and suggested I write letters asking for autographs. I thought it sounded ridiculous.

Until boredom won.

Weeks later, the mailman delivered a massive box of envelopes. Inside were signed items from Arnold Schwarzenegger, David Lee Roth, Iggy Pop, Def Leppard, and Michael Jordan.

Then a package arrived from Ireland — seven autographed items from Bono and U2.

That’s when I realized this wasn’t just a hobby.

The One Envelope My Mom Was Not Happy About

Around that same time, something happened that still makes people do a double take.

While I was away at college, my mom called and said, “You have a large envelope here… and the return address says Corcoran Prison, California.”

Inside was a handwritten postcard from Charles Manson.

Yes. That Charles Manson.

He wrote back, signed it, and even added his infamous symbol. My mom was furious. She could not believe I had written him asking for an autograph.

To be clear, I wasn’t fascinated with him as a person. I was fascinated by the idea that someone so infamous would actually respond.

That postcard eventually sold for about $600 and now sits in a museum in Miami. It was the moment I realized memorabilia isn’t always about admiration — sometimes it’s about history.

When the Hobby Became a Business

I opened an eBay store called The Treasured Rock and started authenticating everything through PSA. If it wasn’t real, I didn’t want it. Anything that turned out to be secretarial went straight in the trash.

I reinvested into higher-end pieces — Elvis, Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles — and framed items with ticket stubs and backstage passes.

When Rocklahoma launched in 2007, I became a vendor and sold over $20,000 in memorabilia in two days. I met countless bands and built real friendships.

Amazon later invited me to be an exclusive dealer for authenticated rock memorabilia. It took off — until real estate demanded more of my time.

Meeting Your Heroes (Mostly a Good Idea)

Most of the time, meeting your heroes is incredible.

Some of the kindest people I’ve ever met include Sammy Hagar, Gene Simmons, John 5, Nikki Sixx, and the guys from U2.

Some… not so much.

There was one absolute nightmare experience at a Bon Jovi concert. I will never share details. Ever.

One of the funniest surprises was hanging out with Sebastian Bach at a Van Halen concert. We were just standing there talking like normal guys at a show — and I even bought him a beer. Still makes me laugh.

When Rock ’n’ Roll Came Full Circle

One of the most meaningful moments I’ve ever experienced with music didn’t even happen to me directly — it happened to my son.

Before a KISS concert, we spent a long time backstage talking with Gene Simmons. No rush. No attitude. Just real conversation.

During the show, Paul Stanley noticed my son in the crowd and pulled him up on stage. One second he was watching the concert like every other kid, the next he was standing on stage in front of thousands of people with the band that changed my life.

That moment will always mean more to me than any autograph, guitar, or backstage pass ever could.

The John 5 Story (Why This One Still Blows My Mind)

Years earlier, I had acquired a massive, one-of-a-kind 1978 Paul Stanley KISS solo album sign that once hung outside Peaches Records in Oklahoma City. Five feet by five feet. Nearly 300 pounds.

When we were preparing to move, I stared at it and thought, I love this thing… but I am absolutely not moving it again.

I reached out to John 5 on Instagram.

Fifteen minutes later, my phone rang.

“Hey Wyatt, this is John 5.”

Shipping wasn’t an option, so he said if I could bring it to Los Angeles, I could come to his house and see his KISS collection.

My brother Josh said one thing: “Let’s go.”

We turned it into a rock ’n’ roll road trip — Route 66, Winslow, Sunset Strip, lunch at the Whisky, Joshua Tree.

John answered the door in full rock gear… holding a hairless cat.

After hours of stories, he returned with a guitar case.

Inside was a black EVH guitar.

“Eddie personally gave me this,” he said. “And he played it.” He said, "I want you to have this guitar since you love EVH."

That guitar hangs in my office today.

All because I didn’t want to move a sign.

The Collection Today — The Pieces That Mean the Most

Today, my collection includes thousands of signed items, over 300 vintage rock tour shirts, thousands of guitar picks, hundreds of used drumsticks and drum heads, thousands of backstage passes, and more than 90 guitars.

Some of my favorite pieces include Eddie Van Halen’s personally owned guitar, Nikki Sixx’s stage-used bass, multiple Paul Stanley stage-played guitars, Ace Frehley’s hand-drawn Les Paul, The Edge’s Music Rising guitar, and Bono’s Irish Falcon.

Other favorites include Bono’s worn Versace sunglasses, a 1978 David Lee Roth hand-drawn stage layout, a signed 1968 Jimi Hendrix calendar page, a fully signed Beatles fan magazine, notebook paper signed by the original Rolling Stones, Gene Simmons’ handwritten lyrics, and fully signed albums from Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Every piece has a story.

The U2 Moments That Still Don’t Feel Real

U2 has been my favorite band for most of my life. I joined their fan club in 1984 and never left.

During U2’s Elevation Tour, I received a true All-Access VIP pass. My wife and I walked past security, past the crowd, and into an empty arena while the band sound-checked.

They played several songs while we sat there alone.

It felt like a private concert.

After soundcheck, I stepped into an elevator and realized it was just me… and the guys from Hanson.

Another sentence I never expected to say.

In 2006, I was selected to attend a private U2 by U2 book signing in New York City. I almost missed it — the event was less than 24 hours away.

My mom said, “You have to go.”
Angie said the same thing.

So we went.

Bono laughed at an old photo of himself from U2’s last Oklahoma show in 1983 and promised they’d come back.

They did.

Full Circle

I’m grateful for my career in real estate.

But music has been with me my entire life.

It started with a song in my dad’s truck.
It exploded when I saw KISS on TV.

These days, I still collect a few special things, but as I get older, my plan is to slowly start selling pieces from the collection and letting them move on to new homes.

I recently sold an album signed by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck. That one was tough to let go. I know I’ll never find another one like it.

But the memories, the stories, and the music will always stay with me.

And the only real downside?

My hearing didn’t survive the journey.
