After 30 years in Oklahoma real estate, I’ve seen it all. Yes, I’ve walked past cattle and horses on listing appointments like it’s just another Tuesday. But trust me, the strange sights don’t stop at the barn door.
From the quirky to the downright bizarre, here are some of the most unforgettable (and hilarious) things I’ve encountered while walking through people’s homes.
A Backyard Tortoise Older Than Me
Imagine walking into a showing and being greeted by a 100-year-old pet tortoise slowly making its way across the backyard. He moved like molasses but stared into your soul like he’d seen the fall of empires. Honestly, he might’ve been the original homeowner.
A Heart-Shaped Bathtub Straight Out of Dumb & Dumber
Walked into a primary bathroom once and BAM—there it was: a bright red, heart-shaped, two-person tub, identical to the one Harry and Lloyd were soaking in during Dumb and Dumber.
All I could think was: “Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!”
And honestly? The tub kind of did.
A Whole Collection of... "Adult" Memorabilia
Let's just say this showing came with some very unexpected accessories. Some homes have built-in bars—this one had an entire… theme. I backed out faster than a seller with no appraisal contingency.
A Secret Chapel in the House?
Hidden door. Narrow hallway. Flickering light. I felt like I was in a Dan Brown novel until I walked in and saw it: a full chapel with a pulpit and pews. Yes, in someone’s house. No explanation needed, I guess.
Pinball Wizard Paradise
Ever seen an entire wing of a house filled with vintage pinball machines? I have. I even played one. (It was the Metallica one, in case you’re wondering. Five stars.)
A $1,000,000 Chandelier
I’m used to seeing nice lighting, but this was a million-dollar chandelier—insured, appraised, and hanging so low I nearly headbutted it. If the listing said “turnkey,” they meant gently.
Trap Doors, Bookcases & Hidden Rooms
Indiana Jones has nothing on some of these houses. I’ve opened what looked like a linen closet and found myself in a secret media room. Pro tip: always check behind the bookshelves.
A Pro Recording Studio in the Guest House
This wasn’t just a garage band setup. We’re talking full soundproofing, mixing station, isolation booth—the works. I half-expected Bono to walk in and ask for a showing.
A House Full of Shirley Temple Memorabilia
Entire rooms dedicated to Shirley Temple. Dolls, posters, signed items—even wallpaper. I didn’t know whether to applaud the dedication or call an appraiser who specializes in black-and-white cinema.
A Fireman's Pole (Yes, Really)
Second-floor bedroom had a fireman’s pole going straight to the kitchen. Because why waste time with stairs when you can channel your inner first responder and slide into breakfast?
Bowling Alleys, Gun Ranges & Animal Oddities
I’ve seen homes with:
-
Private bowling alleys
-
Indoor gun ranges
-
A full-size taxidermy lion
-
A polar bear rug once owned by Lee Iacocca
-
A toilet installed inside a shower stall (yes, one space. Think about that combo for a second.)
-
A pet pig named Bacon
-
Elton John's personal red piano
-
And a door once owned/used by Wyatt Earp—who, I must say, had a great name. I approve.
So… What Is It About Real Estate?
Real estate is not just contracts, closings, and curb appeal. It’s a front-row seat to the weird, the wonderful, and the totally unexpected. You never know what’s behind the next door. And that’s half the fun.
After decades in this industry, I’ve learned that no two houses—and no two clients—are ever the same. The beauty is in the variety. The joy is in the stories.
Final Thoughts
I love this job. I love the people I meet (ok maybe not all). And yes, I even love the oddities. (Mostly.)
At the end of the day, real estate is more than just square footage and comps—it’s about connection, creativity, and occasionally dodging an Elvis room or dodgy taxidermy.
Here’s to keeping it real in real estate—and to never underestimating what might be behind Door #3.
