After spending 28 years with the same real estate company, I took a bold step and launched a local independent firm—Poindexter Properties—with my father, David Poindexter. While I cherish the time I spent building that vision with him, I quickly learned one of the most valuable (and humbling) lessons in my entire career: big dreams require big infrastructure.

I assumed running my own independent firm would give me freedom, higher splits, and more control. In reality, my business suffered. Without a globally known brand, the marketing power, support systems, and referral pipelines I’d become accustomed to disappeared. Within months, I was on the verge of losing everything I had built over decades.

Then I made the move back to an internationally recognized brand—and almost overnight, my business quadrupled.

The difference? Global recognition, powerful tools, elite marketing, and a name people trust.

And yes—sometimes the grass actually is greener on the other side. I learned that the hard way, but I’m grateful for the experience that led me here.

Today, I’m proud to own The Agency Oklahoma alongside my partner, Wayne Kirby. Being part of The Agency has been the most energizing chapter of my real estate career. This brand is forward-thinking, tech-driven, media-savvy, and globally respected. When I say people recognize it—I mean everywhere. I’ve worn The Agency hat in airports, restaurants, even a cruise ship gym—only to be stopped again and again by people who know and love the brand. I’ve literally picked up clients just by wearing a sweatshirt.

Here’s what I didn’t expect:

And let me say this—I totally understand why many Realtors are drawn to a “cap” commission model. It’s easy to feel like you’re keeping more of your money. But what many don’t realize is that a non-cap company—especially one with global presence, elite branding, and powerful resources—can actually help you reach a level of success that far exceeds what you could achieve with a capped model. In the long run, it’s not about how much you keep—it’s about how much more you can make when you have the right tools, exposure, and support.

Now let’s talk leadership—because it matters more than people realize. Our leader and CEO, Mauricio Umansky, is simply the best we could ask for. Yes, you’ve seen him on reality TV, but what people don’t see is how humble, kind, creative, and genuinely present he is for his agents. He truly loves this company, and it shows. Mauricio personally helped us launch The Agency in Oklahoma. He’s helped with our marketing strategies, offered advice on referrals, and even assisted with a transaction in Los Angeles. And he’s available. He picks up the phone. He answers texts. He remembers EVERYONE’S name—I honestly don’t know how he does it. He makes you feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger. For perspective: I never even met the owner of my last company after 28 years there. That says everything. With Mauricio, you don’t feel like you work under someone—you feel like you’re building with someone.

Even more surprising? How many agents have reached out wanting to join—and how poorly some are treated by their current brokers for exploring a new opportunity. I’ve seen it too many times. Ridicule, threats, and burned bridges. But here’s the thing: changing brokerages is a personal decision. No agent should ever be made to feel guilty for seeking what’s best for their business and family. If someone chooses to leave The Agency, we’ll always wish them well. We don’t tear people down—we celebrate them, wherever they go.

We’re not recruiting based on headcount. We care more about integrity and character than we do production. We believe in doing business with good people. Our goal is to create a community where agents feel supported, celebrated, and equipped to thrive.
