What Luxury Really Means (And Why It Might Surprise You) - Wyatt Poindexter - The Agency

What is LUXURY?

When people hear the word luxury, most immediately picture mansions with infinity pools, Ferraris parked in front of private jets, or someone vacationing in the Maldives wearing a watch that costs more than a small country’s annual budget.

There are luxury homes, luxury cars, luxury watches, luxury purses, luxury vacations… heck, I once saw a listing for a luxury chicken coop. Yes, that’s a real thing. Those hens were living better than most college students.

But what is luxury—really?

By definition, luxury is: “The state of great comfort and extravagant living.”

Interestingly, nowhere in that definition is money mentioned. Not once.

Because when you break it down, luxury isn’t about price tags.

It’s about experience.

Luxury: The Stuff You Don’t Really Need (But Kinda Love)

Let’s be honest—nobody needs a Birkin bag. Nobody needs a Porsche GT3 RS. Nobody needs a marble kitchen island the size of Rhode Island.

But… is it nice to have them? Absolutely.

Do I personally enjoy luxury things like cool shoes and Porsches? Guilty.

Have I ever convinced myself that limited-edition sneakers were an “investment”? Maybe. No further questions.

Luxury items are fun. They’re indulgent. But they’re not the only version of luxury worth chasing.

Clint Eastwood Said It Best...

Sure, he's best known for “Go ahead, make my day.”

But there’s another quote (less famous, more profound) that hit me in the gut:

“Don’t look for luxury in watches or bracelets. Don’t look for it in forks or sails. Luxury is laughter. Luxury is friends. Luxury is being loved by people and being respected. Luxury is still having your parents alive.”

Mic. Drop.

He goes on to say that real luxury is the ability to play with your grandkids. To feel joy. To be present. Things no amount of money can buy.

That quote has stayed with me.

Because the truth is—designer brands fade.
Cars depreciate (not 911's).
Even luxury homes need a new roof eventually.

But laughter around a dinner table?
Moments with people you love?
That’s the kind of “real estate” that appreciates forever.

Luxury, According to Scripture

Scripture has a complicated relationship with luxury.
On one hand, it warns against the dangers of excess and materialism.
On the other, it reminds us that what we’ve been given is a blessing—and we’re called to steward it well.

Proverbs 10:22 says: “The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.”

Translation: It’s okay to have wealth and comfort—as long as it doesn’t have you.

So yes, enjoy the finer things. But also:

  • Be generous.

  • Stay humble.

  • And maybe don’t finance a Bentley if your emergency fund is a half-used Chili’s gift card.

So What’s Luxury To Me?

I sell luxury homes for a living. I’ve toured properties with indoor bowling alleys, private wine cellars, 32-car garages, panic rooms, and pools with fire features that look like Marvel movie sets.

But you know what real luxury is for me?

  • Being able to walk and breathe without pain.

  • Sitting at dinner with my wife and laughing until one of us snorts.

  • Watching my kids grow into strong, kind, funny, thoughtful people.

  • Waking up healthy, with purpose, surrounded by people I love.

  • Catching a U2 concert on a Tuesday and not needing a week to recover.

And yes… luxury is also a clean pair of original 1985 Jordans and a Porsche 911 that hugs the curves just right.

Because I’m still me.

The Final Word on Luxury

Here’s the truth: Luxury isn’t always what you can buy—it’s often what you can enjoy.

It’s not just the million-dollar home—it’s the memories you make inside of it.
It’s not just the five-star vacation—it’s the deep breath you finally get to take.
It’s not just the rare wine—it’s the story told while pouring it.

If you’ve got people you love, a roof over your head, food on the table, and a few laughs to go around…

Congratulations. You’re already living a luxury life.

Even if your “walk-in closet” is actually just a highly organized hallway.

So go ahead—make your day.

Appreciate the blessings, laugh a lot, love even more, and if you happen to do it all while wearing cool shoes in your Porsche? Even better.

And if you take nothing else away from this—remember this:

Luxury is waking up with purpose.
It’s loving and being loved.
It’s living fully—not just accumulating more.

Don’t wait until you “make it” to enjoy your life.
Live it well, now.
Be grateful for the small things.
Chase experiences, not just stuff.
And build a life that feels rich—even if your bank account doesn’t say so (yet).

Because real luxury? It’s already within reach. And it starts with how you live today.
